Wings Over Liverpool 2003 - By Jo Rishton.
My Love for WINGS began back in the seventies when I was six years old and the sound of Let Em In was blaring out of my Mum and Dad’s record player. I became a fan instantly. Throughout my life I’ve listened to other music but Wings as a band have earned a very special place in my heart not just Paul & Linda but *every one of the band members* that joined the line-ups throughout the years.
Words cannot explain how I felt when the lights went down at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre on the 25th August 2003. I never dreamt I’d get to see members of WINGS perform their hits live on stage and felt proud to be a WINGS fan seeing Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough walk on stage to warm applause and cheers (both members of the original WINGS 71-73 line-up) and also see Howie Casey (from the Brass section 1975-1979) and Steve Holley from the 1978-1980 line-up perform on stage with the Beatles Festival resident McCartney tribute band Bob Bartey’s Band On The Run. The atmosphere throughout the theatre was electric as we were treated to hit after hit performed by Banned On The Run and the masters themselves note perfect! You wouldn’t have believed that it had been over 30 years since former band members had performed these songs together. From Smile Away from the Ram album to Big Barn Bed, The Mess, (one of my absolute favourites!) from the Red Rose Speedway album (CD), to the beautiful performance of My Love where Henry’s guitar solo sounded as beautiful as the record! I could feel my eyes welling up because I couldn’t believe I was actually hearing Henry and Denny play these songs after all these years!! Not only that, the song was written for Linda McCartney so it was a very emotional evening. I saw drummer Denny Seiwell wiping a tear away whilst playing My Love. He informed me after “It was a very emotional moment and all I kept thinking about was the good times we had with Linda and Paul”. Henry and Denny also performed songs with Banned On The Run from WILD LIFE (Important to remember Henry McCullough didn’t perform on the WILD life album ED) he played the songs fantastically. Hearing WILDLIFE was awesome!! It never used to be on my favourite list till I heard it live, the guitar work during that song is something else!! Halfway through their set with Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough Bob Bartey introduced WILL LEE to the crowd. He sung Live and Let Die. Will Lee performed as Paul’s bass player during the star studded concert in New York (in honour of all the New York Fire fighters, the heroes during the tragic event of September 11th.) Henry and Denny left the stage to a warm round of applause and cheers from the audience and on came Chris Hall who performed with Paul during his Run Devil Run Period!
Half way through the evening Bob Bartey introduced the audience to Chris Hall who worked with Paul McCartney during the Run Devil Run albums, and TV appearances designed to promote the album. By this time we were bopping in our seats (I was almost out of mine! ED unfortunately this year of all years! The Royal Court Theatre had issued seats.) Chris Hall sang Brown Eyed Handsome Man, among other songs.
Steve Holley joined WINGS in 1978 and walked on stage to a warm applause and cheers!! The band played songs from the Back To The Egg album which Steve performed on during his time with WINGS. They sounded amazing, from Old Siam Sir, Getting Closer to a breathtaking performance of Coming Up featuring Howie Casey and his brass section! Howie Casey played the saxophone for WINGS during the 1975- 1979 tours! It was wonderful to hear Banned On The Run perform those famous WINGS song accompanied on stage by a brass section led by the original brass band member Howie Casey. Songs like Letting Go sounded incredible and throughout the night Bob Bartey and Banned On The Run sounded wonderful, they did us fans more than proud! Back to Steve, he was really rocking on those drums by this time and the audience couldn’t take it any more and leapt to their feet and were dancing along to the awesome sound of Spin It On!!!! Banned On The Run’s lead guitarist Marcus had been worrying about the complicated guitar solo in SPIN IT ON for six months! He shouldn’t have worried Marcus’s performance throughout Spin It On would have done Laurence Juber proud!
The evening ended with ROCKESTRA! In 1978, Wings won a Grammy with ROCKESTRA and by this time the whole audience had run to the front of the stage cheering the band along! You could tell Steve Holley and Banned On The Run were loving every minute of it, especially Banned On The Run’s drummer Shaun whose face was a complete picture as he performed ROCKESTRA alongside his drumming hero Steve Holley! As a fan this concert had been a dream come true for the WINGS music has played an important part of my life! I’d like to thank former band members Denny Siewell, Henry McCullough, Steve Holley, Howie Casey for taking part in such a unique concert and for making the night extra special for us WINGS fans.
WINGS band members are as loyal to their fans as we are to them. Nothing is too much trouble for them. After the concert they stood talking to every single person who was waiting at the stage door waiting to thank them for a wonderful evening. Throughout the Beatles weekend they happily posed for photos, signed photos, albums, and shared some wonderful stories of their time in WINGS during a fascinating interview with Spencer Leigh which took place in the Adelphi Ballroom on the Sunday. After the interview once again Denny, Henry, Steve and Howie, spent the next couple of hours signing fans merchandise, the amount of time they spent talking to each individual fan was lovely to see.
Recently, WINGS made the TOP TEN in the TV documentary showing us the worlds Top 50 BIGGEST selling bands/Pop Stars were they proudly came in at number 9!!! As a fan I was thrilled to bits, also WINGS fan Jorie B Gracen recently got a petition together designed to have (all the WINGS band members) their names inducted to the legendary Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of fame! Hundreds of fans have signed the petition world-wide from as far as Brazil here are just some of the comments written on that MORE than deserved petition!!!! With A Little Luck, (keep your fingers crossed!) WINGS as a ‘band’ will one day will be *rightly* inducted to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Of Fame! What I want to know is why’s it taken them so long?
I'm proud to be a fan of WINGS because at the end of the day My Love for them ‘Isn’t Silly At All”.
