Twenty Four Hours From TULSA Out Via Sanctuary 27th June 2005
Gene Pitney has become a regular visitor the UK since the aryl 190s when he stormed the Top 10 with 24 Hours From Tulsa, the song for which he remains best known. As well as enjoying chart success in his own right, Gene also penned smashes for Ricky Nelson (Hello Mary Lou), Bobby Vee (Rubber Ball) and The Crystals (He’s A Rebel) to name only three. Conversely he was the first performer to record a song by emerging tunesmiths Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (That Girl Belongs To Yesterday), which gave him a second consecutive UK Top 10 hit. Always more successful chart wise in Britain than his native US, Gene eventually the No 1 spot when his 1989 collaboration with Marc Almond – a revival of ‘Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart’ – introduced him to a new generation.
Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa is the first collection to comprise all of Gene’s UK and US hit singles (1961- 1975) together with the best of his B sides plus the mid-1960’s country duets recorded with ‘George Jones’ (I’ve Got Five Dollars And It’s Saturday Night) Billboard #16/1965) and’ Melba Montgomery (Baby, Ain’t That Fine Billboard #15/1966). This 3-CD set also includes a selection of sought after album tracks, making this a superb entrée to one of the most distinctive and enduring performers from 1960s pop. With input from Gene himself this stunning collection will appeal to newer Pitney fans and long time collectors alike.
