Marianne Faithfull is best-known for her high profile romance with rock super star Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) a 1960’s icon and an actress. Marianne Faithfull was first coaxed into a singing career by Rolling Stones manager, Andrew Loog Oldham in 1964. Marianne enjoyed a series of hits during the 1960s that set her fragile voice against delicate orchestral arrangements. It was a whole decade later when she developed that brooding, melancholic yet fierce tone for which she is now so renowned.
‘Dreamin’ My Dream’s, released in 1978, was Marianne Faithfull’s first album for a decade and a rare departure into country rock. The poignant smoothed out vocal styling that she adopted for this album suggested that her hard life drew parallels with a downtrodden country music star. Containing bonus songs written by Bob Dylan (I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight’) and Waylon Jennings (‘This Time’), ‘Dreamin’ My Dreams’ revealed that her attitude would persist and could be put to harrowing effect when the mood required.
Dreaming ‘My Dreams’ by Marianne Faithull is one of the best albums I have heard in a long while. I admit to you this is the first time I have actually sat down and listened the music of Marianne Faithfull and her talent blew me away! Dreaming’ My Dreams’ is a Country Rock album which features some fantastic music. The songs that stand out for me are: Wrong Road Again, I’m Looking For Blue Eyes, All I Wanna Do In Life and This Time. all great songs and Faithfull sounds fantastic throughout.
The end of the album consists of four bonus tracks, these songs were originally recorded with the The Grease Band who were Marianne Faithfull’s band during the late 70’s, and recorded the album Faithfull, with Marianne in 1978. Tracks featuring The Grease Band are: Wait For Me down by the River, I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, That Was The Day (Nashville). The album also includes my all time favourite song Honky Tonk Angels, her vocals are a credit to this song. Lady Madeleine is my favourite songs on the album, it’s a powerful ballad performed with passion and the song was written by Marianne herself.
The title and start of the album Dreamin My Dreams is a lovely ballad, but don’t let that fool you as this album should be rightly placed among the Country Rock classic albums from the 60’s. The quality of the recording is clear, and truly captures the heart of Country Rock recording during the 60’s. During an album there’s normally a couple of tracks that don’t appeal to you the first time you listen to it but I can honestly say there isn’t one on Dreaming ‘My Dreams. It’s a brilliant album, carefully selected, and presented with a nice booklet of photos of Marianne Faithfull from past and present. It also includes a history of each song and why it was chosen for the album. Don’t just take my word for it why not have a listen to it yourself? Dreamin’ My Dreams is available to purchase from all good record stores.
