The Overtures Christmas Party - By Jo Rishton
It was a Thursday evening as Marilyn and I made our way down to Castle Hall In Hertford to see the fabulous The Overtures.
As we arrived, we walked into a hotel foyer packed with faces and friends that we both knew from International Beatles Week. Jean, Debbie, Marcus, Lucy, Jane and Yolanda from Holland (Yes The Overtures are that good!!!) It was lovely to see them all again because we don’t normally get the opportunity to meet up before August. As we all stood around chatting and catching up on all the gossip, the time flew and before we knew it in walked the stars of the show – The Overtures. It was fantastic to see them all again and on home turf to!! That evening a little birdie informed us it was Den Pugsley’s Birthday (The Tures bass player) we all came armed with gifts and Den was left overwhelmed with the amount of presents and cards he got!
As we made our way into the hall and found our table we were all delighted to find that the band had made sure that we were all sat together! As we took our seats we were joined by some more regulars from Beatles Week, the twins Sarah and Louise, Laura, Kim and Claire, it really was a great night!
After we had finished our three course meal (which was wonderful by the way) we had just enough time to powder our noses, and get ready for the Ultimate sound of the sixties, provided for us by the multi talented Overtures! As we made our way down to the front of the stage, the lights dimmed and on walked – The Overtures.
They treated us to a set list that would impress any sixties fan and tickle the taste buds for any 60’s Anorak. The Overtures had us dancing to songs such as Just One Look (The Hollies) Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Women, Under My Thumb (The Rolling Stones) All Day And All Of The Night, the fabulous Lola (The Kinks) I Saw Her Standing There, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (The Beatles) Pin Ball Wizard, Substitute (The Who) Itchycoo Park (The Small Faces) Mr Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn a song where Den excelled himself! (The Byrds), Great Balls Of Fire ( Jerry Lee Lewis) Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison) which features a mind blowing drum solo from Steve Phypers (it was rock ‘n’ roll, basically ed !!) The end of the set very fittingly ended with an awesome version of Slade’s Merry Christmas Everyone!! By this time in Castle Hall there was a Whole Lot Of Shaking Going On!! It truly was a fantastic Christmas party, courtesy of The Overtures and I would like to thank them for a wonderful and special evening!!
As the gig came to a close The Overtures came out to talk to us for what was left of the night. It was lovely to catch up with them again and all that’s left to say is Den, thanks for everything and I look forward to seeing you all again soon’.
