The Dave Morris Charity Concert The Willows Salford 25th January 2004 - By Anne Marie Trace.
The Dave Morris Charity Concert – The Willows Salford 25th January 2004. (The Dakotas, Wayne Fontana, Dave Berry, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, Herman’s Hermits, Salford Jets, The Troggs.)
I arrived early to meet up with the Dakotas and Mike from sleepyjoe.com. As we got inside the Salford Jets were on stage doing a sound check, so it was off to the dressing rooms for a bit. I went out to watch the Dakotas sound check; I do love all the technical bits that the audience rarely get to see. As they were doing that, various other artists were wandering through the venue. It seemed every time I looked up there was a member of a 60s band in front of me. It was fun hanging out, at one point I made myself comfy sat cross-legged on the floor of the dressing room waiting for it to be time for the band to go on.
When the Dakotas went on I went out and perched on a table in the bar area at the side of the stage. The Dakotas set was Everlasting Love, My Girl, Do You Want To Know A Secret, The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Any More, Four Tops Melody (“except the first one” which was by the O’Jays) Small Faces and All Right Now (Free).
Then they introduced Wayne Fontana – his set was I’m A Believer, Um Um Um Um Um Um (yep – still the best to to the best group ever!), Game Of Love (one of my faves!), Baby Now That I’ve Found You, Pamela Pamela and finally a rousing rendition of Hold me!
Dave Berry was up next, but I confess I nipped off with Eddie from the Dakotas while he got some food during this bit. I was back in the main room in time for the Dozies though. Their set was Hideaway, You Keep Me Hanging On, Zadadak, Save Me, The Legend Of Xanadu (that stage seemed awfully small for that whip!!!!!!) Bend It and Hold Tight.
I wandered around for a little while Herman’s Hermits were on stage. The venue was packed! The evening was completely sold out and there was a waiting list for ticket returns. I bumped into Mike Byrne of the Beatles story and the band Juke Box Eddies, seemed odd to bump into a face from Liverpool in my home town!
I headed home about 11.30, the Salford Jets had finished their set and unfortunately I was just too tired to stick around for the Troggs. (Though I’d met Reg Presley in the dressing room earlier and he seems quite lovely.
