One of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time has got to be former Mott The Hoople front man Ian Hunter. Ian Hunter’s stunning new DVD Strings Attached is the work of an un-sung rock legend whose music has been admired by millions of fans, across the universe. Ian Hunter and Mott The Hoople have been an inspiration for many of the worlds top rock stars from Def Leppard, The Clash, Kiss, Motley Crue, Blur and Oasis to name a few. It was through Hunter’s musical talent that many of the above where inspired to pick up a guitar and follow in his foot-steps. Unfortunately, for unique artist like Ian Hunter, England hasn’t left the door open for gifted talent they’d sooner have the likes of (Pop Idols) entertaining the society. Sadly, all of the good ones are taken as Ian Hunter is now living and performing in USA.
Strings Attached was recorded at the Sentrum Scene, Oslo, on January 29th and 30th 2002. This stunning DVD introduces his fans to the ‘other’ side of Ian Hunter as he performs his music live along-side an orchestra. This DVD is a must-have for any fan, during the concert we are treated to beautiful new arrangements of the old classics such as Rest In Piece, All Of The Good Ones Are Taken, I Wish I was Your Mother, Twisted Steel, Boy, 23A Swan Hill, WATERLOW, Irene Wild (my favourite! ED) Once Bitten Twice Shy, Rollerball, Ships, and the beautiful performance of a traditional classic A Nightingale Sang In Barkley Square. As well as a number of Hunter’s original rockers the classics Michael Picasso, All the way from Memphis, Saturday Gigs, All The Young Dudes, to list a few! Throughout the evening each song is given a new arrangement, any die-hard fan will sincerely appreciate this DVD because they will remember the rockers the first time around. Ian Hunter sings each song with such passion and gives an incredible performance throughout. As a performer, Hunter has a magical stage presence and throughout the evening keeps his whole audience captivated, by wondering which Hunter classic is going to get a different improvisation next.
During the evening, Ian Hunter proudly introduces his orchestra to the audience informing his fans “the oldest member is 30 years old!” And what talent! It must have been a thrill for them to arrange and score such rockers and turn them into a superb proms/rocks performance. An honouree mention goes to lead guitarist Rant Producer, Andy York. his electric and acoustic performance during various numbers is simply breath-taking. I can’t praise this DVD highly enough all I can say to music lovers reading this review is Strings Attached is a must-have in your DVD collection, you will not be disappointed.
