The Mags - Live at the Pier Head Liverpool August 2005 - By Jo Rishton.
During the Sunday of International Beatles Week, I made my way down to the Pier Head in Liverpool to see my friends The Mags perform in one of the biggest summer festivals ever as part of the world famous Mathew Street festival.
The Mags came on stage earlier than scheduled which meant I had to make a mad dash from one end of the Pier Head to the other! Luckily, I made it in time and managed to get to the front of the stage so I could take some photos of the lads in action. Throughout the bands hour long set they performed songs from their stunning debut album 'No Plan B,' which is out this month, and quiet simply rocked the Pier Head !!One of the highlights was: 'When I Get Home,' I fell in love with this track the minute I downloaded it from the band's web site and it was great to finally hear them sing it live, not only that it was the song that got me into The Mags to start with so it will always have a special place in my musical heart. However, the song 'Freefalling,' is my favourite because the guitar riff by Anthony Wilkinson during that song is is simply awesome!. 'Fever' definitely got the crowd in the mood for a boogie, and 'I Feel Freedom,' was rocking!! Another song I love is called 'The River Styx,' the bass lines (provided by Grieg Wilding) and vocals (Mike Kennedy) throughout the song are excellent and hearing it live makes you appreciate it and The Mags all the more! A quarter of the way through the band's set other music lovers started to venture to the foot of the stage to join the 'Mags' fans so they too could check the band out closer, it became apparent how much they loved their music because they started yelling things to the band like"what's the name of your band!?" Do you have a fan club? A web site? Unfortunately the bands sign containing all this info had fallen down during their rocking performance having been hung up behind drummer, Mark Bleasedale at the start of the set. By the end of the gig fans were screaming for more and much to the fans delight they played another stomping version of their classic 'When I Get Home.'
After the gig the bands lead singer Mike Kennedy was interviewed, and told the story of how they came to record the bands debut-album ‘No Plan B,’in New York City.
If you love this kind of rock 'n' roll you'll dig the Mags and most importantly the only music you will hear is their own - check them out at a venue near you.
For me this band are the BEST un-signed band in the country because The Mags music represents what rock 'n' roll is all about. It's raw, exciting, bursting with energy, and can only be described as 'Backbeat.' I know I've said this before, and I'll say it again. We believe The Mags have something special to make in the music industry when their time comes and it will. They'd definitely give the UK charts a wake up call - The Mags style!
