My expectations were I was going to see a good show and some good friends. The result was way beyond that.
The Cutting Room was the perfect intimate venue for this event, put on by my wonderful friends Ellen and Reverend Greg. Denny came onstage starting off with a couple of acoustic numbers before gradually bringing on the whole band. I couldn't help but notice how excellent the band sounded, and at about the third song in I figured out why. They had been part of the band working with Alan Parsons on the traveling Beatles Tribute show he put a few years ago.
Denny was extremely loose and having a lot of fun telling some great stories about his time with Wings and the early Moody Blues, and he was constantly interacting with the audience throughout the show. Of particular note was when he mentioned how truly in love Paul and Linda really were. On a funnier note was when he mentioned that Heather now has his money. As he told a 60's story of someone knocking John Lennon and John knocking him right back (the actual story is a little gorier), I couldn't help but notice how May Pang, who was sitting just a few seats away, reacted saying YES, that would have been John.
Musically, Denny sounded great, and of course the highlights for me were all the Wings stuff, including a blistering version of NO WORDS, a fantastic version of BAND ON THE RUN, and somehow pulling off a great version of LIVE AND LET DIE, as well as some of his own songs such as AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN, and of course GO NOW. I found myself in a bit of awe sitting just a few feet away watching the man play the music that he was so involved with in Wings. His wit and humor throughout the show was very Liverpudlian and even, dare I say, Lennonish, helping me understand even more how this man spent 10 years writing and playing music with Paul McCartney.
The atmosphere was very relaxed as I was surrounded by my friends such as the Lovely Marianne, Nick The Master Masterer, Rev. Greg, the great writer Maureen who had brought along Joe from the Cryers, new friends Marla and Scott, and of course the wonderful Ellen. The Cutting Room people were also very cool making this evening one of the most enjoyable events of the year.
If you get the chance to see Denny Laine with this band, may I use a cliché and say - GO NOW!
