With a career spanning nearly 50 years, Joe Brown is arguably one of the world’s most respected musicians. In the late 50’s, he was amongst the first wave of home grown rock ‘n’ roll stars to emerge and, as one of the UK’s most talented guitarists, he had the honour of playing with Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, and other US artist on the occasions that they toured Europe. A well respected session man, he was a regular on groundbreaking TV shows such as ‘Boy Meets Girl,’ and ‘Oh Boy,’ eventually charting in his own right with hits such as ‘A Picture of You,’ and continue to record prolifically, present his own television and radio series, and maintain a steady tour schedule of around 100 dates a year.
Recorded and released in the early 1990s, ‘On Stage’ captures the atmosphere and variety of a live Joe Brown gig. Including several of his early hits (That’s What Love Will Do, Shine), this album also features the lesser heard ‘Is A Bluebird Blue?’ Jack Clements’ classic ‘It’ll Be Me, Johnny Cash’s ‘Get Rhythm and ‘Sea of Heartbreak,’ a hit for Don Gibson in 1961. A charming rendition of ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful;’ brings Joe’s virtuosity to the fore as do the lively instrumentals ‘Dargonfly’ and ‘Have Nagila.’ By way of contrast Joe’s chripy ‘thingy-er-ney’ persona is much in evidence on songs like ‘I’m Henry The Eighth I Am and the friendly banter that links numbers.
