Album review by Paul Clakrson. This is a different Petula Clark from the swinging sixties Petula who gave us hits such as ‘Downtown’ and ‘I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love’. Although this 28-song collection does include her hit ‘Don’t Sleep In The Subway’, Petula tackles other well known songs and puts her own stamp firmly upon them. Petula Clark was up there in the 60’s with the likes of Dusty Springfield , Sandie Shaw and Cilla Black, she continued to record, appear on TV and appear on Broadway through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2003. There’s Jazz, Pop, Soul and a touch of Country on this cd, songs such as ‘Rain’, a Beatles b-side given a big band touch and Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears Of A Clown’. Other songs include ‘The Boy From Ipanema’, the typically sixties ‘England Swings’, ‘Groovin’ and a Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent number ‘Gotta Tell The World’. For fans of Petula Clark this is ‘must buy’ cd, for fans of great music from one of England’s great singers it will sit nicely in your collection to play on any occasion. www.petulaclark.netPaul Clarkson
