Interview with Rusty Anderson - the Lead Guitarist in Paul McCartney band 2005/2006.
Rusty Anderson was born and raised in Los Angles and has been a life long fan of The Beatles. He was five years old when he first heard the sound of the fab four blaring out of his sister’s record player. “The minuet I heard them I fell in love with them, I used to have dreams that The Beatles would come and ask me to join their band” Little did he know years later that dream was going to come true. Like all teenagers, Rusty listened to other music other than The Beatles. He was ten years old when he discovered he had the talent to write songs. Throughout his life he was inspired by the driving sounds of rip roaring rock guitars. Rusty admitted “Chronologically I listened to Jimmy Hendrix, Cream, The Who, The Mothers Of Invention, Captin Beefheart, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, and Genies (with Peter Gabriel) Bowie, original Alice Cooper band, Iggy. Todd Rundgren, Debussy, Gershwin, Dylan, Prince, The Police, Lou Reed, U2 Jane’s Addiction, Nirvana. However the man that influenced Rusty guitar performance was his child hood hero the late great Mick Ronson. (Former Mott The Hoople). Throughout his musical life he has worked along side artist such as Sir Elton John, Sinead O’ Conner, The Wallflowers, Perry Farell’s solo album or maybe you have heard him perform on songs such as Sanatra’s Game Of Love, or you may have danced to the guitar rift he wrote for the song Livin’ La Vida Loca.
However, during this time Rusty had been penning his own songs and thought it was time to record them on an album with his own band The Rusty Anderson Band featuring Todd O'Keefe, (Dusty Rocherolle Rusty and Dusty) and Matt McKenna. During the interview I asked Rusty about his childhood and how he became interested in the guitar here’s what he had to say. “The guitar found me. it's the obvious choice, right? You can carry it around, strum it and annoy your parents. What’s better than that? I finally got a tunable electric guitar at age eight. Mom said: Its time for lessons now, Rusty". I thought that would be great but after a month I couldn't stand learning to read and those cute little songs so I quit and taught myself. I made up my own riffs and used books to learn chords and songs. Mostly, I’ve listened to records and figured out pieces by ear that inspired me.” What was the name of your first band and what kind of music did you play? “My first band was called Eulogy. We played melodic, punky, proggy, British inspired rock.” Where your parents supportive of your musical interest and ambitions or did they try and disillusion you? ”They were very cool about it. I don't think they liked it or disliked it. They let us practice in the living room for years straight. I lucked out having parents like that, don't you think?” Can you remember your first professional gig and which band was it? I played at my Jr. High school dance. I can’t remember if we got paid or not. It was a band that turned into Eulogy. What's your all time favourite guitar riff?”There are so many; Purple Haze, Cold Turkey, Day Tripper, Tax man, Watcher of the Skies, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, I Can't Explain, Heart Full Of Soul, We're Not Gonna Take It....I could go for a while.” As well as being an amazing guitarist Rusty can play a number of other instruments here’s the list he impressed me with. “ As well as the guitar I play some piano, some vibes, bass, hammered dulcimer, bouzouki, sitar etc. but guitar's my main axe.” What has been the highlight of your career so far and what ambitions do you have for the future? ”Playing the coliseum in Rome with Paul (as well as Red Square, etc.) I'm also proud of getting out of bed. I know better than to announce a big plan. We shall see where the river takes us, right?” Do The Rusty Anderson Band have any plans to tour and tour if so were can we see you ? “Aside from Paul McCartney I only play in one band Rusty Anderson band. We will be doing gigs in LA probably in March and maybe early April. I'll be gigging with Paul McCartney around Europe late May through to June. And hopefully more shows with my band in July and August.”
What kind of music do The Rusty Anderson Band play and which category would you place your own music in? “Modern, eclectic rock I suppose. I’ve never been one to focus into a narrow sliver category and put my flag on it. I’d rather stick my flags into any random planets I land on.” How did you come to choose the title of your album? (Undressing Underwater?)”I saw it in a book and it tickled me. I related to it somehow.” Were can fans purchase a copy of your album from? “CD Baby.com, amazon.com, notlame.com & Amoeba Records. It should be in most stores by next month or so.” What are your favourite tracks from the album? “They have changed. Now its Devil's Spaceship, Hurt Myself and Sentimental Chaos. It was Damaged Goods and Coming Down To Earth.” I’d like to take this opportunity in thanking Rusty Anderson for taking the time out of his very busy schedule it was nice to talk to you. Special thanks to Corinne Decker without her help this interview wouldn’t have been possible.
