BRUMBEAT
BRUM BEAT & BEYOND
A West Midlands Anthology – 1963-69 (CMEDD1146)
Out Via Sanctuary February 2006
The essential 2 –CD set is the ideal companion to Castle Music’s Merseybeat compilation, which is also due out February 2006. This new compilation of West Midland’s music from the 1960s focuses on the local stars – Mike Sheridan, Steve Gibbons, Carl Wayne and The Vikings, Steve Powell as well as the rather more nationally successful names such as the Spencer Davies Group, The Move, and The Moody Blues. Also including early pre-fame offerings from future ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne (as a member of the Idle Race) and Slade (as the ‘N Betweens,) Brum Beat is essential for anyone interested in the West Midlands scene or, indeed, anyone with more than a passing interest in British pop music of the 1960s.
In the wake of Merseybeat’s world-conquering success, the leading British labels of the mid-1960s began the feverish search to unearth a similar regional hotbed of musical excellence. Sufficiently removed from both Liverpool and London to boast its own scene of stars, Birmingham was similarly awash with hundreds of groups battling for musical supremacy. Brum Beat, as it was christened by Cliff Richard producer and EMI, A & R chief Norrie Parmor, was certainly given the promotional push by the industry but, various individual successes, the Birmingham sound failed to catch the imagination of the public in quite the same way as Merseybeat.
Available to order from the Sanctuary group or can be purchased in all good record stores including HMV.
Available from all good record shops, including HMV or visit our friends at Sanctuary records for more information.
