How old were you when you learnt the instrument you play?
Maciek Samul: I learnt to play the bass guitar when I was little at pre-school! At the time I was listening to The Beatles, and learned to play everything by ear.
Kamil Sedek: I learnt to play the drums when I was 9 year and I also learned how to play the piano when I was at school.
What music did you listen to whilst growing up and who where your music idols?
Maciek Samul: The Beatles, British rock music and many hard rock classics from the 70's.
Kamil Sedek: Since I was a kid, my father fed me with classic rock like Deep Purple, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. My first musical idols were Gary Moore and Carlos Santana.
Who are the bands influences?
Maciek Samul: My biggest musical and life influence is Sir Paul McCartney. Everything he does is absolutely the best. I love his music career from The Beatles and Wings to his solo years. I love his vocals, and his bass playing. He is always the beginning of everything that I am trying to create as an artist.
Kamil Sedek: One of my biggest inspirations is Steve Gadd. I admire his simple but effective style. He plays when it is necessary, and without showing off.
As a band, why is it important for you to keep rock and roll alive?
Maciek Samul: Rock and roll is the most pure, honest, deep feeling that any human has in his or her soul. That is why we should keep it alive - to stay human.
What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Maciek Samul: For me, the best moment was the album premiere and the concert in celebration of this event. It was everything that I had dreamed of since I was a little kid.
Kamil Sedek: The best moment was the first three-day festival in Wegorzewo, truly the best days of our lives.
The Best Days Of Our Lives - By The Rookles.
When did you discover that you could write music and what inspires you?
Maciek Samul: It was in our teenage years. We used to write songs earlier on, but it was always too similar to someone else's songs!
You have recently released your debut album 'Open Space,' how did the album and name come about?
Maciek Samul: The Story of the album is as long as is the music history. We always wanted to have a title with a double meaning. We prepared the cover and booklet in one of Warsaw's biggest companies. Open Space can also be the open space that still needs to be filled by our music.
What are your opinions of the music industry today?
Maciek Samul: Rock and roll is still alive, but in Poland it is considered alternative music, that has no place on mainstream television and radio stations. It is the way it is. You have to really give it your best to be in a band, but in the end it's always about loving what you are doing, no matter how the music industry treats you.
Kamil Sedek: I have no idea what it looks like in the West but in Poland, radio stations are everything when it comes to your artistic existence. They are pulling the strings, and interfering with your music.
What ambitions do you have for The Rookles?
Maciek Samul: To be the best Polish rock and roll band in the world, but being the best Polish rock and roll band in Europe, and North America will do I guess.
Describe a Rookles gig.
Maciek Samul: A Rookles gig? See for yourself in Liverpool. It's always a lot of energy, dancing, jumping, and of course - rock and roll!
If you were asked to describe the musical career and band The Rookles. How would you word it?
Maciek Samul: Friendship, struggle and never giving up. As long as we stay together we will be happy with The Rookles and our career.
Kamil Sedek: My musical career and The Rookles is one and the same. It's a very interesting adventure with many hard moments that we always managed to pull through. I do not regret any second I have spent with the band. They are my second family.
