The Solid Silver 60's Show 14th May 2004 - Grand Theatre - Blackpool. By Jo Rishton.
14th May 2004 Anne Marie and I made are way to the Grand Theatre Blackpool to see the annual Solid Silver 60s show! We were so excited we forgot to pick up the tickets!!) Thankfully, we had enough time for my parents to drive us back home and collect them, one hour later we arrived in Blackpool armed with tickets!!
Before we knew it the lights went down and the show began. The Dakotas were the first band to hit the stage that night. They opened their set with a great version of Everlasting Love, even though The Dakotas line-up only includes includes one original band member, the legendary Mike Maxfield. The musicians on that stage performing along side him are more than worthy of there place in the band.
Over the years they have reinvented themselves with an impressive line-up of musicians consisting of Eddie Mooney on lead vocals, and bass guitar. Toni Baker on keyboards, (backing vocals), Pete Hilton on drums. Throughout their set, we were treated to a few songs that charted for The Dakotas during the sixties, the fabulous performances of ‘Bad To Me’, ‘Little Children’ were among my favourite numbers from The Dakotas set.
Eddie Mooney introduced Wayne Fontana to the audience; his set consisted of hits (from, the band he fronted in the 60s The Mindbenders’). Fabulous songs such as UM UM UM UM UM UM UM, Game Of Love, Pamela Pamela, to list a few. Mr Fontana had us rolling in the isles at his jokes, quick wit and stage banter! He made the night for me, not only that, he’s a great singer!!
Next on stage walked another music legend, Brian Hyland. During the 60’s Brian Hyland had a No 1 hit with Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, and the beautiful Sealed With A Kiss. We were treated to those hits and more! His set was thoroughly entertaining, and meeting him during the interview was great! A very nice man who made time for his fans, and half way through his signing session could be seen browsing through our fanzine!
Anne Marie and I, made our way back to our seats armed with ice cream, and chatted about the show so far and we both agreed we were having a ball!
John Walker was the Solid Silver 60’s show special guest (From The Walker Brothers). He walked on stage to warm applause and screams from certain members of the female audience! Throughout the evening, as John Walker sang, you could hear sighs from his fans, and by the end of his set he’d gained even more!!! John Walker treated us to Make It Easy On Your Self, (the Walker Brothers Classic) The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore, No Regrets, and My Ship Is Coming In a brilliant performance. Along with Bryan Hyland and The Dakotas, John Walker joined in with the meet and great in the foyer to sign autographs and meet his fans. As you can imagine his table was very busy indeed.
Finally, the moment we’d all been waiting for. The star of the Solid Silver Sixties Show 2004, Mr Peter Noone, and the audience of female Noonatics went WILD!!!! Ok I know what you’re thinking (has he aged!?) And the answer still remains the same No!!!! Bearing in mind this was the first time I’d seen Peter Noone; he had me smiling from start to finish. His performance was brilliant as he treated us to the wonderful Hermans Hermits classics such as I’m Into Something Good, Silhouettes, Wonderful World (my favourite!) No Milk Today, and Something Happening. You could say he had the whole theatre dancing and singing along from start to finish!!! (Myself included) The thing I love about Peter Noone is how he communicates with his fans during each performance. He knew most of them by name and happily chatted to them from the stage! The thing that amused me was, half way through the show he pointed out a fan that was only a ‘teenager’ and kept asking her if she’d come to the right show! That for me said it all, rock ‘n’ roll is timeless, but then classic music, and classic performers last don’t they!!? Before we knew it the show was coming to a close, and Anne Marie and I had to leave before the final song to get the last train home, otherwise we’d have been stranded in Blackpool. Before we left, we said hello to Anne Marie’s friend’s The Dakotas who were selling their new album in the foyer! They went like hot cakes which meant I’d to wait for mine. (And it was worth the wait thank you! See review in the CD Reviews section).
We’d like to thank The Dakotas, John Walker, Wayne Fontana, Brian Hyland, Peter Noone for an enjoyable, nostalgic, evening I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!
A big thank you to my good friend Anne Marie, thanks for taking me along, here’s to the next one!
If you want a fabulous night out, the Solid Silver 60’s show (when touring) is the gig to see.
